Plants Are All for Now

This week I finally finished the collected poems of Derek Walcott. As stated in another post from when I first began his collection I am not the most into poetry. I still enjoyed it and there was fun dealing with another person’s notes, which I found to disagree with my take. Anyway, there will be a Readings post coming soon and I hope there can be pictures of the book by the ocean where it belongs. There will also be the conclusion of the Story Components series in this blog next week.

Apples don’t belong in America, why is apple pie so American?

As is common for me my next read is not a Nobel but more fun and straightforward. The last read from my birthday gifts “The Botany of Desire: A Plant's-Eye View of the World” by Michael Pollan. So far I’ve learned more about Johnny Appleseed than I ever got from being a child, but that’s what happens on the West Coast, the only American heroes are Lewis, Clark and their friends (and one slave).

The next Nobel will be either Harold Pinter or Henrik Pontoppidan. It is getting increasingly hard to get materials. When looking for some of the first 30 authors there are no English translations readily available. It feels as though there will be some librarian assistance needed soon since I don’t intend to pick up Swedish, German, or Provencal just to read one book.
